Position Description: Flower Grower
Reporting to the head gerbera grower, you will be responsible for the productivity and quality of a portion of the total 8.5 hectares of gerbera cut flower production and the people who work in that area. Responsibilities:
- Train, supervise and co-ordinate the activities of workers who cultivate and harvest flowers.
- Monitor the crops to ensure quality growth & harvesting of cut flowers
- Monitor water and pH & EC levels, ventilation, CO2 and other environmental conditions
- Monitor and control pests, using IPM biologicals and pesticides
- Establish work schedules and procedures factoring in seasonal demand and crop cycles
- Formalize and document cultivation and production processes to ensure consistency and repeatability
- Resolve work-related issues, prepare and submit reports to head grower
- Develop and implement strategies to improve production efficiency, reduce waste, and minimize costs
- Ensure compliance with health and safety policies
- Perform the same duties as workers supervised
Requirements:
- Minimum 1 year greenhouse experience, preferably in cut flowers.
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Licence to apply chemical fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides.
- Experience with environmental control systems (Argus/Priva) a plus.
Skills / Abilities:
- Physically capable of regular greenhouse activities- including standing, walking, lifting, bending, and withstanding periods of heat and humidity.
- Effective verbal and written communication in English; Spanish language skills an asset.
- Demonstrated leadership qualities, personal initiative, attention to detail, and efficiency.
- Work Conditions: Year-round in an indoor greenhouse and/or warehouse environment. Some periods of heat and humidity.
- Comfortable using various equipment daily.
- 50 hours average per week with rotating weekend availability
