Position Description: Flower Grower

Reporting to the head gerbera grower, you will be responsible for the productivity and quality of a portion of the total 8.5 hectares of gerbera cut flower production and the people who work in that area. Responsibilities:

  • Train, supervise and co-ordinate the activities of workers who cultivate and harvest flowers.
  • Monitor the crops to ensure quality growth & harvesting of cut flowers
  • Monitor water and pH & EC levels, ventilation, CO2 and other environmental conditions
  • Monitor and control pests, using IPM biologicals and pesticides
  • Establish work schedules and procedures factoring in seasonal demand and crop cycles
  • Formalize and document cultivation and production processes to ensure consistency and repeatability
  • Resolve work-related issues, prepare and submit reports to head grower
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve production efficiency, reduce waste, and minimize costs
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety policies
  • Perform the same duties as workers supervised

Requirements:

  • Minimum 1 year greenhouse experience, preferably in cut flowers.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Licence to apply chemical fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides.
  • Experience with environmental control systems (Argus/Priva) a plus.

Skills / Abilities:

  • Physically capable of regular greenhouse activities- including standing, walking, lifting, bending, and withstanding periods of heat and humidity.
  • Effective verbal and written communication in English; Spanish language skills an asset.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities, personal initiative, attention to detail, and efficiency.
  • Work Conditions: Year-round in an indoor greenhouse and/or warehouse environment. Some periods of heat and humidity.
  • Comfortable using various equipment daily.
  • 50 hours average per week with rotating weekend availability
