South America

Sakata Group acquired Agritu Sementes

Sakata Seed South America was founded in Brazil as Agroflora in 1968 and incorporated into the Sakata Group in 1994. The company, with more than 55 years of history in South America, announced that, through Sakata Seed Corporation, it had concluded negotiations and acquired all the shares of Agritu Sementes on May 30, 2025.

The acquisition will significantly expand Sakata's portfolio, further consolidating its market share in the onion segment (a highly strategic area for the company). It will also increase its offer of high-yielding varieties for customers. Agritu Sementes has extensive experience in the market and, throughout its 30-year history, has contributed to the evolution of onion cultivation in Brazil through continuous investment in seed technology, production, processing, and marketing. Located in the city of Ituporanga, in Santa Catarina (Brazil), the company has an excellent structure and state-of-the-art equipment, as well as highly qualified professionals.

It should be noted that, as of the acquisition, the two companies and their respective brands will continue to operate independently, prioritizing the management of their product portfolios, employees, customers, and suppliers.

"The acquisition of Agritu Sementes strengthens our position in the onion market, increasing our variety offer and expanding our capacity to serve producers in the South American market, combining Agritu's high-performance genetics with Sakata's excellent service and territorial coverage," stated Marcello Takagui, president of Sakata Seed South America.

According to Arno Zimmermann and Sebastião Müller, co-founders of Agritu, seeing their company's legacy incorporated into a century-old group of great tradition and credibility in the market, such as the Sakata Group, is a significant milestone in its history. "We are very happy and confident that this operation will help us reach new horizons, expanding the experience we've accumulated over many years in the onion growing segment and building a high-value brand for the regional market. Quality, trust, and focusing on innovation have brought us here. We share these values with Sakata, which will undoubtedly bring countless benefits to our customers, partners, and employees," they stressed.

Finally, Sakata's CEO highlighted that this agreement would benefit the entire sector: "Onion producers in Brazil and other South American countries will have access to high-yielding genetics and quality seeds through Sakata. We plan to accelerate the development and launch of onion cultivars with superior genetics, offering producers solutions that bring even more security and profitability to the business."
