Cucumber prices have surged over the past week, but in fact, all greenhouse vegetables are performing well thanks to the current fine weather. "The cucumber price increase is particularly striking. In just one week, prices have jumped from €0.20 to €0.80 at auction. Of course, the weather is glorious, which is boosting demand," says Bruno Vuerinckx of BelOrta.
Is the good weather the only reason for this? "I think crop changes may also be a factor. Moreover, due to the recent high levels of sunshine, the plants have produced heavily, and with the recent darker days, they now need some time to recover. As a result, we're seeing a slight dip in production. That said, it doesn't mean we're facing shortages, quite the opposite."
"It's just a little less than in previous weeks. When you combine that with strong demand, it results in good prices at auction. That's a welcome development. I expect these high prices to remain stable for a while. We've already pre-sold next week's volumes, and those are still fetching good prices. That will likely continue, especially with more good weather forecast for the weekend."
Other greenhouse vegetables are also benefiting from the upward trend. "We're seeing prices for aubergines also rising somewhat. The same goes for yellow peppers, and tomato prices are holding up well at €0.60 to €0.70, which is solid for the month of July. All in all, greenhouse vegetables are performing well."
