Year-round greenhouses growing trend in Azerbaijani vegetable farming

In Azerbaijan, greenhouses are no longer viewed solely as a seasonal solution for winter crops. Due to climate change and increasingly unpredictable weather, more growers are turning to year-round greenhouse production.

This shift is visible in regions such as Ismayilli and Tovuz, where open-field farming has become riskier. A grower from Tovuz shared his experience managing greenhouses through all four seasons:

"In summer, temperatures inside greenhouses can get extremely high, so we had to install cooling systems. It's an added cost and requires technical maintenance. Proper irrigation and ventilation are also critical."

Despite these challenges, he notes that pest control is easier in greenhouses than in open fields—an advantage for crops like tomatoes and cucumbers even in warmer months.

Farmers also point out that greenhouse-grown vegetables typically have a higher production cost, which affects market pricing. However, the controlled environment helps ensure consistent yields and quality throughout the year.
