Belarus expands greenhouse strategy to meet off-season vegetable demand

Belarus's greenhouse development strategy for 2023–2027 aims to fully cover domestic demand for cucumbers, tomatoes, and leafy greens during the off-season. Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Shuleiko said this in an interview ahead of the Belagro 2025 expo.

Thanks to better crop scheduling, the country already produces over 130% of its off-season cucumber needs (as of 2023/2024).

"To increase the production of tomatoes and other in-demand crops during the off-season," Shuleiko said, "greenhouse farms will continue to expand and modernize until 2027, including adding supplemental lighting."

In 2026, 9.8 hectares of new energy-efficient greenhouses are planned, including 7 hectares at Agrokombinat Zhdanovichi and 2.8 hectares at OAO DORORS.

Beyond the main strategy, more greenhouses will open in 2026–2027. This includes 6 ha at Svetlogorsk Pulp and Cardboard Mill, 6 ha at Minsk Vegetable Factory, and 7 ha at Agrokombinat Zhdanovichi.

These projects will be funded by the Development Bank of Belarus and the National Development Fund.

Together with other efforts, this will fully cover Belarus's off-season demand for cucumbers, tomatoes, and leafy greens.
