Lower volumes from Spain and favorable weather in Northwest Europe led to higher tomato prices in Europe in March. Especially compared to March last year, the prices stand out positively on the tomato dashboard full of data maintained by the European Commission. The dashboard received an update this week.
In Spain, prices last month were 22% (vine tomatoes) to 46% (cherry and specialty tomatoes) higher than in March 2024. For the other countries on the dashboard (France, the Netherlands, and Italy), the differences with last year's prices are less significant. Compared to the five-year average, prices for vine tomatoes and loose tomatoes in the Netherlands were even 4% (vine) and 7% (loose) lower than the five-year average.
The average price for vine tomatoes in Spain was at the highest level in 5 years in March.
The average price for vine tomatoes in the Netherlands was slightly higher in March than last year.
On average, 2.06 euros per kilo of tomatoes was paid in the EU in March. In the Netherlands, it was 1.68 euros, and in Spain, 1.31 euros per kilo.
