Part of Grodan’s Global Sustainability Exchange:

Dutch propagators tour Ontario Plants' Glencoe facility

As part of a global knowledge-sharing initiative led by Grodan, a group of Dutch propagators recently toured key horticultural operations in Ontario, including a featured stop at Ontario Plants. The visit offered an in-depth look at Ontario Plants' newly opened Glencoe facility — a purpose-built, state-of-the-art greenhouse focused on innovation, sustainability, and biosecure young plant production.

Organized by Grodan, specializing in stone wool growing media, the tour emphasized the importance of sustainable growing practices, climate-smart production methods, and international collaboration. Grodan's own commitment to circular solutions and resource efficiency was mirrored in the tour's focus on operations like Ontario Plants, where environmental stewardship and cutting-edge technology work in tandem.

"We were proud to include Ontario Plants in this tour," said Jeff Hammond, Senior Account Manager, Canadian Commercial at Grodan. "Their new Glencoe facility is a prime example of how sustainable infrastructure, innovative growing systems, and strong partnerships can come together to lead the way in propagation. These types of exchanges are essential in pushing the industry forward."

The Glencoe facility, which became operational in late 2024, features advanced automation, LED lighting systems, water recycling technology, and a precision-controlled climate — all designed to produce consistent, clean, and high-quality young plants. The facility was built from the ground up with sustainability in mind, reflecting a broader shift across the sector toward environmentally responsible horticulture.

"This visit was a fantastic opportunity to showcase our commitment to sustainable propagation," said Mathieu van de Sande, CEO of Ontario Plants. "We believe that combining data-driven precision with environmental responsibility is the future of plant production. Welcoming Grodan's global customers to Glencoe allowed us to highlight how local and global expertise can converge to shape a better future for our industry."

The visit also sparked meaningful technical dialogue. Pieter van Dijk, Chief Technology & Innovation Officer at Ontario Plants, noted: "Our approach in Glencoe is built on the idea of doing more with less — less energy, less water, and fewer inputs, while delivering more quality and consistency. The exchange with seasoned Dutch propagators affirmed we're aligned with global leaders in the move toward smarter, more resilient growing."
