Big increases for lettuce, sweet peppers, and cucumbers

According to the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Statistical Office, vegetables, and strawberries were grown on a good 3,100 hectares of open land and under greenhouses and plastic tunnels (so-called high walk-in protective covers) in 2024.

In 2024, vegetables were grown outdoors in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on an area of just under 2,400 hectares (+1.4 percent compared to 2023). At around 14 hectares, the area under high walk-in protective covers remained almost unchanged from the previous year. By contrast, the harvest volume of crops grown under high walkable protective coverings increased by 140.1 percent. Tomatoes account for the majority of vegetable cultivation under greenhouses and plastic tunnels, with just under 10 hectares. The area under tomato cultivation expanded by 14.9 percent compared to the previous year. In terms of harvest volume, large increases were recorded for lettuce (+6.6 times), peppers (+127.8 percent), and cucumbers (+38.4 percent).

In 2024, a total of 69 farms grew vegetables in the open field. The number of vegetable farms increased by 6.2 percent. Since 2014, the number of these farms has grown by 50.0 percent. According to the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Statistical Office, vegetable farms were able to achieve a harvest of just under 62,700 tons in open fields. Leaf and stem vegetables accounted for the largest share, with a harvest of just under 28,600 tons on an area of over 1,000 hectares. Fruit vegetables, including cucumbers, edible pumpkins, zucchini, and sweet corn, contributed the smallest share to the vegetable harvest, at around 5,700 tons.

In 2024, 20 farms in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and three farms under high walk-in protective covers cultivated strawberries on a total area of just under 760 hectares, representing an increase of 14.7 percent over the previous year.

The proportion of vegetable cultivation areas managed according to organic guidelines amounted to 28.1 percent in 2024. This represents an increase of 23.9 percent compared to the previous year. Cabbage vegetables cover the largest area with just under 250 hectares, followed by fruit vegetables (200 hectares) and leaf and stem vegetables (180 hectares). The harvest volume in this segment amounted to around 14,600 tons.
