Geofin: "Effective alternative to improve fruit setting and quality"

Excellent performance by pollinating kiwi plants with bumblebees

To obtain high-quality kiwi fruit, everything starts with good pollination. "Efficient cross-pollination is necessary to ensure a good setting. We used to rely on bees(Apis mellifera) for this task, but in recent years, the use of bumblebees (Bombus terrestris) as pollinators has become more widespread," says sales engineer Damiano Cerantola.

Why bumblebees? Because, thanks to their ability to thermoregulate, these insects can operate even in the unfavourable weather conditions (10-12°C and overcast skies) typical of the kiwi flowering period, which, in many areas of Italy, takes place between April and May. They are also able to work in low-light environments, e.g., covered facilities or greenhouses, while maintaining a high level of flight activity and promoting cross-pollination, which is essential in kiwis.

"From an operational point of view, the way to use bumblebees in orchards is very simple: hives (artificial beehives) must be installed directly in the fields a few days before the start of flowering. They must be placed in areas sheltered from direct sun and at a height of around 30-50 cm above the ground, possibly with a physical barrier to prevent attacks by ants."

Numerous studies and field trials have shown several benefits in the pollination carried out by bumblebees: first of all, a significant increase in the number of fruits produced, thus improving overall yields even in less fertile varieties. In addition to this, the fruits obtained have a larger size and superior organoleptic qualities, offering a better product in terms of both taste and nutritional properties.

"Pollination with bumblebees is a useful and effective solution, increasingly used in modern fruit farms. Its adoption can offer valuable support to farmers aiming for sustainable, high-quality production.
