Germany:

Strawberry cultivation in greenhouses and tunnels is gaining importance

Last year, strawberries were grown on 757 hectares in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, slightly more than in the previous year. A total of 7,622 tons of strawberries were harvested across the state last year—4,491 tons in open fields and 3,131 tons under foil. According to the data, there are 20 farms growing strawberries across the state. Greenhouse strawberries have been picked for several days at the Denissen farm in Wöbbelin. According to owner Michaela Denissen, the particularly early strawberries are grown in a heated greenhouse covering one hectare. The heat comes from the farm's own biogas plant.

Harvesting in the tunnels is expected to start after Easter. This cultivation method is becoming increasingly important, according to fruit expert Rolf Hornig. Most of the harvest still comes from open fields, "but that will certainly continue to shift." Michaela Denissen is also convinced of this. If it rains on the strawberries, they have to be sold on the day they are harvested if possible. The fruits grown in protected cultivation, on the other hand, keep for four days, with no difference in taste. "The varieties are the same."
