Italy's GI.ST.EL. Plast: The future beyond plastic is already here

Packaging and sustainability go hand in hand

"In today's world, environmental concerns have become a top priority, and our industry, the packaging sector, plays a pivotal role in promoting sustainable practices. In our company, we have adopted a clear mission, that is, to develop eco-friendly solutions without compromising product quality and functionality," says Stefano Occhipinti Amato, the owner of Gi. St. El. Plast S.r.l., an Italian company specializing in packaging for fruit and vegetables in plastic and biodegradable materials.

"We prioritize versatility in our solutions. We offer both generic solutions and fully customized packaging in terms of materials, sizes, thicknesses, printing, microperforation, macroperforation, and cutting, able to perfectly adapt to the specific needs of our customers," continues Occhipinti. "Flexibility is one of our strong points. We have invested heavily in research into biodegradable and compostable solutions. For more than a decade, we have been converting biodegradable cellulose film, producing reels for Flow Pack packaging, for which we have obtained the two most important European certifications in compliance with DIN EN 13432:2000-12: OK COMPOST certification from TUV Austria and Compostable from Din Certco."

Sustainability remains a guiding principle
"In fruit and vegetable packaging, we also introduced PLA film, a polylactic acid material that can be used to make flowpack reels, single-fold pouches, and lids. By offering a wider range of options, we allow our customers to make informed choices based on the type of packaging and the target audience. "We are committed to the responsible use of materials, including polypropylene, polyethylene, and PVC, to ensure consistent quality and technological innovation."

"Among the most popular products," says the expert, "are flowpack reels, which are essential for the large-scale distribution sector. These products are available in neutral or printed options, with micro-perforated and macro-perforated designs, and in a variety of materials with different types of thickness. These products offer versatility, catering to diverse storage and presentation requirements. The range of customizable covers is extensive, particularly in the fruit and vegetable sector, and they are available with or without double-sided adhesive, printed or neutral, perforated or smooth. These covers are made from environmentally friendly materials. Every detail is carefully designed to meet precise needs."

"The same level of customization is also available for our single-fold pouches, which are ideal for a variety of applications in both the food and non-food sectors. Gi.St.El. Plast offers a wide range of materials, including neutral, pearlescent, metallized, anti-fog, and eco-friendly options. Every aspect of our products can be tailored to the customer's specifications, including printing, perforation, material, thickness, and tear-off. Our commitment is to deliver a product that meets the exact needs of our customers."

Another item is the expandable stretch reel made of double-layer PVC for automatic packaging machines, commonly used for packaging carrots. They are available in different types of thickness and also in printed versions. A simple but essential product for companies that pack fruit and vegetables. Finally, the product for which the company was born is the conical bags for flowers and plants, widely used for packaging basil and other herbs in general.

According to Occhipinti, the added value of their service lies in their tailor-made approach: "We offer a comprehensive service. We listen to our customers' needs, suggest ideas and develop products. The customer does not have to adapt to the product; the product adapts to the customer. Quality is a must, as is paying attention to the environment. This is our approach to looking to the future."
