Clemens Götzinger from Lindner Fruchtimport GmbH:

"High, stable demand for colorful tomatoes in winter"

Not only in summer, but also during the cold season, people want a little more color in their lives. "We significantly expanded our tomato range at the end of last year and have found that colorful and special tomato varieties are also in high demand in winter. This is partly due to their colorfulness, but also to the unique flavors that distinguish these varieties from conventional tomato varieties from Spain and Morocco," says Clemens Götzinger, co-managing director of Lindner Fruchtimport GmbH.

New additions to the range include the Amela, which won the 2022 Fruit Logistica Innovation Award (FLIA), the purple vine tomato Yoom and the purple beef tomato Murice, the old oxheart tomato Sweet Marmande, and the Antociano. Götzinger: "The latter variety is a special beef tomato rich in anthocyanin, which means it contains a high concentration of antioxidants. It is therefore not only visually appealing, but also offers consumers physiological added value."

Trend towards colored fruit and vegetables
The company, which is based in the Frischezentrum Frankfurt, counts mainly classic wholesale customers and resellers, as well as gastronomers, among its buyers. "The Amela is quite expensive and is therefore only sold to selected customers. However, in my opinion, the other varieties are not exorbitantly expensive and are also relatively stable in price. We see that the colorful tomatoes are well received in many areas, whether by innovative gastronomers or the better weekly market and specialist retailers. There is a clear trend towards colored fruits and vegetables. The task now is to increase the familiarity of these 'new' tomato varieties."

Colored tomatoes as a year-round product
The colored tomatoes are purchased from different growing countries, depending on the variety, mainly from Spain and France. "In principle, all varieties are available all year round. Compared to the standard varieties, the demand for these special varieties is quite manageable. So far, the quantities on offer have been sufficient to meet demand. Although there has been extensive rainfall in Spain, this has had less of an impact on greenhouse crops and more on the supply situation for outdoor products such as lettuce and the like. However, it is still unclear to us whether availability will meet demand, even after the annual seasonal change in tomatoes," he concludes.
