US (CO): Local greenhouse growers celebrate 40th anniversary

After the cold snap last weekend, spring is just around the corner and is sure to bring a bundle of warm weather with it. For the owners of Apple Valley Greenhouses Inc., located in Penrose, spring marks the busiest time of year and 2025 marks their 40th anniversary in Fremont County.

Founded Jan. 15, 1985, by Lon Bradfield and Dan Strom, the greenhouse was originally located at Seventh Street in Penrose with two defunct buildings. For four decades, the greenhouse has specialized in planting and growing more than 2,000 varieties of flowers, vegetables, fruits, shrubs and more.

Bradfield, a certified horticulturist, has been a staple of the business since its inception, and after Strom retired in 2013, he continued to provide spring-inspired goods to Fremont County.

The greenhouse specializes in wholesale plants and Fremont County residents may recognize Apple Valley's plants at Brady's Garden Center, Ace Hardware, Petal Pushers, and Touch of Love, as they have been a central supplier for many local businesses for decades.
