As cold temperatures threaten local crops, farmers at McGlasson Farm in Hebron are taking action to protect their produce. Luke McGlasson, owner of the farm, said, "Today we are covering our strawberry fields with these gigantic tarps, blankets whatever you want to call it. They will cover acres and acres of strawberry fields."
With freezing temperatures expected overnight, McGlasson and his team are working diligently to save the strawberries.
"We have to put sandbags out for weights around the fields and we spread these blankets around the fields and hopefully it keeps the fields a couple degrees warmer than everything else," McGlasson said.
The strawberry plants have already begun to bud, and McGlasson explained that in a good year, each plant could yield a quart or two of strawberries. "Strawberries usually start blooming in late April early May and then by mid-May is usually when they're fruiting, when they're ripe," he said.
