With the increasing shift toward sustainable agriculture and peat-free cultivation, the demand for high-quality coco coir substrates is at an all-time high. Recognizing this growing need, Gro-Med, a brand by Vaighai Agro, recently inaugurated its third grow bag production facility in Salem, India. This expansion strengthens Gro-Med's production chain, adding to its existing facilities in Pollachi and Dindigul.
Scaling up for a sustainable future
"Our journey began in Southern India, and today, we are proud to be one of the world's leading producers and exporters of coco coir substrates," says Pounraj, the director of Vaighai. "With over 45 years of expertise in the agro-industry, we now export to more than 75 countries, catering to growers in Korea, Japan, the U.S., Peru, China, and beyond."
The addition of the Salem facility brings Gro-Med's annual production capacity to over seven million coir grow bags. "This expansion is not just about increasing volume—it's about ensuring consistency, reliability, and quality," he explains. "Growers worldwide are shifting to soilless farming, and we want to be their trusted partner in this transition."

Why growers are switching to coco coir
"Growers report better fruit quality and higher yields thanks to the ideal balance of air, water, and nutrients that coco coir provides. With the global coco coir market expected to double from $410.75 million in 2024 to $841.84 million by 2033, the demand for reliable, high-performance substrates will only grow."
However, not all coco coir substrates are created equal, and growers face several challenges, including inconsistent quality, delayed shipments, and high costs. "We understand these pain points, which is why we have scaled our operations to deliver a dependable, cost-effective solution."

Meeting the needs of modern growers
Gro-Med's enhanced capacity aims to address the critical needs of today's horticultural and floricultural industries: "Our streamlined production processes and multiple production lines ensure quick turnaround times, keeping growers on schedule," says Pounraj. "Whether you operate a medium-sized farm or a large commercial facility, we can meet your demand without compromising quality."
He elaborates that with three production hubs, they can maintain an uninterrupted supply chain, ensuring growers aren't left waiting during peak seasons. Traceability end-to-end is also a big focus area for them. "From washing to compressing and palletizing, every Gro-Med substrate undergoes strict quality control within our in-house production system."
Gro-Med is currently trying to optimize efficiency further, offering competitively priced substrates without sacrificing quality or availability.
