UK couple celebrate record chili haul

Joy and Michael Michaud, from West Bexington, have been growing Rooster Spur chilli plants for years and have now revealed their latest grow included a haul of 4,100 fruits - beating a record set in 2014 when they harvested 3,200 fruits.

The couple who run their Sea Spring Seeds businesses from the west Dorset village said they were trying to determine the number of fruit they could produce from the plant. Joy and Michael grew the plants in 2024 but have only just counted up the total number.

Joy said: "In 2024, we grew three plants of Rooster Spur to determine the number of fruit they could produce. Seeds were sown in a heated propagator on March 5, and seedlings pricked out into small pots on 24 March.

"Once the numbers were totted up, we were very pleased with what they showed. The best-producing plant yielded just over a whooping 4,100 ripe fruit, while the average yield for the three plants was slightly more than 3,700 ripe fruit. On average, 200+ green fruit per plant were left over, a fair yield in its own right."
