Ennatuurlijk, parent company of Ennatuurlijk Geothermal Energy, has successfully completed the acquisition of two geothermal doublets in North Holland, with a combined capacity of 36 MWH. Previously, Ennatuurlijk only managed the installations, now Ennatuurlijk is the full owner.
The geothermal doublets provide local businesses with more sustainable heat, allowing them to collectively save 28 million cubic meters of natural gas per year. This equates to a CO₂ reduction of 50,000 tons per year. The wells were drilled in 2018 and production started in February 2019.
Ennatuurlijk has acquired the shares from a consortium of greenhouse growers in Andijk. The consortium remains highly involved, as in addition to the existing doublets, Ennatuurlijk and the consortium are joint shareholders of the existing heat network. The company name ECW Geo Andijk BV has been changed to Ennatuurlijk Geothermal Energy Andijk BV.
The growers in Het Grootslag (Andijk) continue to purchase heat from Ennatuurlijk. "Thanks to the acquisition by Ennatuurlijk, we can focus on our core activities and no longer have to worry about operating the geothermal doublets. We are happy to use sustainable and affordable heat, but have experienced that geothermal energy requires a lot of specialized knowledge, time, and manpower. That's why I am pleased that Ennatuurlijk is taking over full management," says Arnaud van Dijk, director of VD Holland.
New developments
With this expansion, Ennatuurlijk now operates a total of six doublets: two in Andijk and four at Agriport in Middenmeer. Currently, Ennatuurlijk is investigating the possibility of developing a third doublet in Andijk. This research was already initiated before the acquisition and aims to provide more sustainable heat in the future, both for greenhouse horticulture and the built environment. Additionally, Ennatuurlijk manages the only active High Temperature Storage (HTS) in Europe. This storage allows for the surplus of produced geothermal heat in the summer to be stored. This heat can then be used by the growers in the winter when demand is highest.
Alexander van Noort, director of Ennatuurlijk Geothermal Energy: "The acquisition of the doublets in North Holland is a long-cherished wish of Ennatuurlijk, following the earlier purchase in Middenmeer. This demonstrates our ongoing commitment to more sustainable heat and makes it possible to develop a third geothermal doublet in Andijk in the future."
