In unique greenhouse near Kyiv, growing tropical fruits year-round

In the village near Kyiv, there is an unusual greenhouse where tropical fruits like citrus, bananas, pineapples, and even papayas are grown all year round. The owner of this greenhouse, 72-year-old Anatoliy Patiy, has developed a unique system that allows the greenhouse to function without continuous heating.

The greenhouse is built using the "Thermos" principle. Its walls retain heat, creating an ideal environment for plant growth, even during cold winters. The temperature inside stays around +25°C without extra heating. This has been made possible thanks to Patiy's patented technology, which he developed in 1995. According to him, such greenhouses not only allow for the cultivation of exotic plants but also serve as the foundation for a profitable business. Patiy has sold over 800 greenhouse projects in Ukraine and neighboring countries, as well as 30 designs in Europe.

The greenhouse generates income not from fruit sales but through the sale of saplings. Patiy has bred citrus varieties that are adapted to indoor conditions and offers "tree gardens" where several types of fruits, such as oranges, mandarins, lemons, and limes, can grow on a single tree. One of the most popular varieties is the "Kyiv Lemon," a hybrid of pomelo and Turkish lemon. It has a mild taste and can grow as large as 1.5 kg.

In addition to citrus, the greenhouse also grows figs, pomegranates, bay leaves, and olive trees. Some plants are resistant to cold and can withstand temperatures as low as -33°C. One of the most interesting experiments was the crossbreeding of fig and mulberry trees—an outcome of 25 years of work—that resulted in a cold-resistant variety with large fruit.

According to Patiy, the sapling business is a promising area and could be successfully developed in Ukraine as well, is confident the greenhouse owner.

The greenhouse features coffee trees, muraya (a plant known for its medicinal properties), and many other exotic plants. Visitors come for guided tours and training on how to care for tropical plants. Anatoliy Patiy shares his knowledge online, publishing tips on growing and helping beginner gardeners.

Thanks to his innovative approach and years of hard work, the farm in Rozhny has become an example of successful agricultural practices in Ukraine.
