India: BCC to launch horticulture waste processing unit

The Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) is expanding its waste management capabilities by setting up a horticultural waste processing unit, modeled after the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation. The decision was made during a recent health standing committee meeting.

Last month, a team of corporators visited Chandigarh on a study tour and were impressed by the horticulture waste processing unit and 'pink poultry' projects. The pink poultry project, already being implemented at Turmuri, where the city's waste is dumped, is nearing completion. The eggs produced by this poultry will be distributed to civic workers.

The new horticulture waste processing unit will require a minimum of 2 acres, and officials have been tasked with finding suitable land in nearby villages. The project aims to generate revenue and alleviate the burden on the Turmuri waste dumping yard.

Hanumant Kaladagi, an environmental engineer at BCC, stated, "Around 5-6 tonnes of garden waste is produced daily in the city. The horticulture waste processing unit will convert this waste into briquettes — a compressed block of coal dust or other combustible biomass material used for fuel and kindling to start a fire, which are in high demand by the industrial sector."
