Figures for 2024 show the direction to take, with acreage under pressure

More kilos of greenhouse vegetables from a smaller area

In 2024, more greenhouse vegetables were harvested in the Netherlands from a reduced area. A total of 1804 million kilos were harvested on 4,830 hectares. The area shrank by 15 hectares, while the harvest was 82.9 million kilos higher.

The remarkable figure is mainly due to a significantly increased harvest in tomatoes. In 2024, 828.5 million kilos were harvested on an area of 1726 hectares. The tomato harvest increased by 102.5 million kilos compared to 2023, according to CBS statistics. More lighting was used again last year. That undoubtedly helps. The tomato area decreased by 45 hectares in 2024.

In bell peppers, production decreased, while the area increased by 15 hectares to 1,570 hectares. The reason for this can be found in the cultivation problems that exist, including crop failures due to root problems. The cause of the problems is still unknown, although extensive research is being conducted. A total of 406.6 million kilos came from bell pepper plants in Dutch greenhouses.

The cucumber production also declined. On an area of 640 hectares (15 hectares less than in 2023), 416 million kilos were harvested. The dark start of the past year also contributes to the lower production.

The area of eggplant remained the same in 2024 as in 2023: 123 hectares. The harvest was 59 million kilos, 1 million kilos less.

Statistics Netherlands has published the final harvest estimate for 2024.
