Belgians spent 17.4bln euros online in 2024
Last year, Belgian consumers spent 17.4bln euros on online purchases. This was a billion euros more than in 2023, representing an increase of 6.7%. In 2024, Belgians did a quarter of all their spending online for the first time. This is according to the latest Market Monitor from sector federation Becom.

Co-op rebrands Nisa and reaffirms support for independent retailers
Co-op is reorganising its supply chain for independent retailers by rebranding Nisa's wholesale operation as Co-op Wholesale. However, the company stressed that there are no plans to change the Nisa fascia. Katie Secretan, previously Retail and Sales Director for Nisa, has been made Managing Director of the new Co-op Wholesale unit.

Marks and Spencer launches for first time in Romania as it connects with grocery tech firm Rohlik Group
M&S has re-launched its International Food offering with European e-grocery partner Rohlik Group. In a LinkedIn post, Aoife Hannigan, Head of International Foods at M&S, said: "We are now offering more of our favourites to our customers, with a significant expansion of our fantastic range (500+ lines) in Czech, Austria, Germany and Hungary. Plus, we have launched for the first time into Romania".

Nisa confirms pulling out of Costcutter supply deal
Costcutter stores face 'massive disruption' at the beginning of 2026 when Nisa has confirmed it will cease supplying fresh, chilled and own-label into the Bestway-controlled symbol group. Nisa confirmed to Better Retailing: "We're not in negotiations and our contract with Costcutter ends on 31 December, 2025".

UK: Supermarket and burger chain planned at ex-waste site
West Suffolk Council announced that German supermarket chain Aldi and American fast food outlet Wendy's have signed agreements to rent buildings which the authority is looking to build on the site. The Rougham Hill recycling centre, at Bury St Edmunds, was replaced by a new site in 2020 and was briefly used as a Covid-19 testing site during the coronavirus pandemic.

Eataly sees 4% revenue growth in 2024, North American market leads
Italian food marketplace Eataly, backed by a €225mln loan, saw 4.3% year-on-year growth in revenue to €684mln and a nearly 30% increase in EBITDA to €53.3mln in its financial year 2024. Despite these improvements, the company posted a €13.4mln net loss for the year, though significantly down from a loss of €28mln reported in 2023. Eataly invested €51mln in new openings, store renovations, and process improvements, according to Italian daily Italia Oggi. North America remained Eataly's largest market, accounting for 60% of its revenue from 15 stores. Europe with 25 stores generated 38% of sales.

Tony's Fresh Market employees overwhelmingly voted against joining a grocery union, according to the National Labor Relations Board. Tony's Fresh Market would have been one of the largest private-sector workplaces to unionize in Chicago in recent years, following a wave of similar efforts at Chicagoland grocery stores, including at Trader Joe's and Dill Pickle Food Co-op.

T&T Supermarket continues U.S. expansion
Asian grocery chain T&T Supermarket is adding another stateside store to its network. The Loblaw Companies Ltd.-owned food retailer announced plans to open a new location in San Francisco, California. It will be located at 2675 Geary Boulevard - the former site of a Best Buy. The store is slated to open winter 2026.

US: Chicago Save A Lot stores face more delays
Grocery store developer Yellow Banana has some final touches left to complete at several of its six Save A Lot stores in Chicago and is asking the city for another deadline extension, reports the Chicago Tribune. "Save A Lot and the Yellow Banana team are grateful to the city of Chicago for their continued partnership and guidance through this long process to remodel and upgrade six stores", Save A Lot said in an emailed statement to Supermarket News.
