Asparagus, agretti, broad beans and peas: The explosion of seasonal produce

Spring is in the air at Fellini Patrizio despite the weather. The main seasonal products are being harvested, and sales have started. Sales manager Andrea Pignato takes stock of the agretti, asparagus, broad bean, and pea situation.

"The weather has not been favourable over the past few weeks, with low temperatures and persistent rain delaying transplants. In any case, we have started harvesting greenhouse agretti, which this year are being mowed by hand already in the fields, so as not to sell the roots. Demand is good, and prices are holding up well."

Another seasonal product is asparagus. "The produce is currently coming from our partners in Puglia. We sell asparagus of three different size categories: asparagina, medium and fiorone. The market is very receptive as the product is not much, and high-quality asparagus is in great demand. Consequently, prices are satisfactory to producers."

Asparagus can be packaged in different formats and Fellini sells them either under its own Freschissimi brand or under the brand of the big retail chains. "We take great care in searching for the best productions, and this is thanks to our member growers, who strictly follow quality specifications."

The peak season of broad beans and peas is also approaching. "We have started selling the produce grown in both greenhouses and open fields in Campania, and the market immediately proved to be very dynamic. Demand is growing, and quotations are also satisfactory."

"However, the rain has slowed down transplanting, and the frost of the past few days has caused losses in transplanted crops. Where possible, we protected them with non-woven fabric, but this was not always feasible. I believe that the market could experience shortages in April, especially for lettuce, when the southern crops will end and the northern ones should come into production."
