Nigeria urged to boost horticulture to access €43 billion EU market

Horticulture stakeholders in Nigeria have called on the Federal Government to enhance local production and supply chains to enter the 43 billion euros EU horticulture and grape market. This call was made during a webinar by the EU-Nigeria Agribusiness Platform, titled "Market Insights: Opportunities in the EU edible vegetables, floriculture and grapes import markets."

Participants included horticulture scientists, academia, government officials, and farmers associations from Nigeria and EU nations. Mr. Bonaventure Mwaghania, CEO of Cenacle Kenya Limited, highlighted Kenya's horticulture success, employing over two million people and generating nearly one billion dollars in exports to the EU. He advised Nigeria to leverage its proximity to EU countries and favorable sea freight rates.

Frank Okafor, from the EU delegation to Nigeria, reiterated the EU's commitment to strengthening trade ties. Aliyu Sheriff, Special Assistant to the President, emphasized aligning with international standards to tap into high-value markets. The Dutch Government supports Nigerian farmers through the HortiNigeria project.
