The Jamestown Community Farm, which has been growing fresh produce for a quarter-century to feed its hungry neighbors, has a new top farmhand at the reins. The operation also has a new greenhouse to help grow the increasingly coveted donations.
Dick Steinbach was elected as president of the Jamestown Community Farm in October to succeed Bob Sutton, who has led the operation — both on the farm and behind the scenes— since it was founded in 2000. Steinbach moved to Jamestown with his wife, Susan, in 2021, and immediately began volunteering at the farm. They joined the board of directors in 2023.
"I spend a lot of time at the farm, so I interact with our volunteers a lot," said Steinbach, whose wife serves as treasurer. They're just a fantastic group of people. I've had a chance to work with our interns quite a bit too, which is really refreshing to spend time with young people who are interested in agriculture and the mission of the farm."
One of the projects that has been ongoing since Steinbach took over the lead role is a heated section of its high tunnel behind the barn. There are now seeds being incubated in the space.
