Increasing adoption of grafted plants by Mexican tomato growers

The use of grafted plants is gaining momentum among Mexican tomato growers. While grafted plants come at a higher cost than non-grafted ones, their advantages in disease resistance and overall plant health make them increasingly attractive. "Growers are realizing that although the initial investment is higher, the long-term benefits in terms of productivity and crop resilience are undeniable," says Manuel Soto, General Manager of Paskal Mexico.

The expanding grafting market
"The market for grafted plants in Mexico is still relatively small, but it's growing rapidly," says Manuel, who has witnessed the industry's development over the past two decades. "Although most plants in Mexico are still not grafted, the trend is shifting. Growers are increasingly recognizing that while grafted plants are more expensive, they contribute to healthier and more productive crops in the long run. This is especially important as tomato viruses spread across the country, threatening yields."

For two decades, Paskal has maintained a strong presence in the Mexican market. Traditionally known for providing greenhouse accessories and solutions, the company has expanded its product line to meet the rising demand for grafted plants. As part of its commitment to innovation, Paskal acquired Tecnografting three years ago, a company with over 30 years of experience in grafting technology and supplies. "This acquisition strengthened our expertise and enabled us to provide even better solutions to our customers," Manuel explains. "We now offer a comprehensive package of products and expertise that supports the entire grafting process."

"We see large-scale growers investing in grafting projects, while an expanding supply chain is making grafted plants accessible to smaller growers as well. The market is evolving, and we are evolving with it," Manuel adds. "Initially, we were known for our trellising accessories and crop management solutions, but today, we provide a full suite of grafting essentials."

In addition to its well-known greenhouse accessories, such as support hooks and RollerHooks, Paskal Mexico now offers grafting and setting clips, twine, bamboo sticks, and protective gear like overalls and gloves.

Long-term benefits and industry developments
As Paskal Mexico remains closely connected to its customers, Manuel highlights further market developments. One significant shift in Mexico's horticulture sector is the rise of medium-to-high-tech greenhouses, particularly in central Mexico. "Growers are changing their production strategies to extend growing seasons and increase yields," he observes. "Investing in technology allows them to optimize crop management, ultimately leading to better returns."

Recognizing the need for broader greenhouse management solutions, Paskal has partnered with various international suppliers to offer specialized products. Last year, the company announced its partnership with Benfried, enabling it to offer a wider range of greenhouse accessories. Additionally, Paskal now supplies coco peat, a versatile growing medium that supports various crops. "Rock wool is particularly popular in pepper cultivation, while coco peat is a more universal substrate suitable for a wide variety of crops," Manuel states.

Addressing industry challenges
As the industry advances, labor shortages and water scarcity remain pressing concerns. Many workers are shifting to berry production, leaving greenhouse operators struggling to maintain their workforce. "This is where automation and improved crop management techniques play a critical role in sustaining productivity despite these challenges," Manuel notes.

Additionally, Mexico's horticultural industry is heavily influenced by its trade relationship with the United States, its primary export market. With ongoing discussions about tariffs and trade policies, Mexican growers must remain agile to navigate potential disruptions. "The U.S. depends on Mexico to fill supply gaps in fresh produce," Manuel explains. "By focusing on quality and reliability, we ensure that Mexican growers remain competitive in this crucial market."

Commitment to growth and innovation
Looking ahead, Paskal is set to strengthen its presence in Mexico by bringing in more strategic partners over the next three years. This expansion aligns with the company's dedication to supporting growers with cutting-edge cultivation products, extensive expertise, and strong industry collaborations.

"Our priority is to provide what our clients need, backed by our local presence and deep industry knowledge. We have always emphasized quality over price, and this commitment continues to drive our success," Manuel emphasizes. "Our long-term clients, some of whom we have worked with for 20 years, share this same focus. The premium market is expanding, and more growers are prioritizing high-quality production. With our growing network of partners and enhanced product range, we aim to ensure these growers have access to the best tools and expertise to achieve their goals."
