First Belgian San Marzano tomatoes of the season sold

The first Belgian San Marzano tomatoes of the season were sold today at BelOrta. The prime tomatoes come from grower Dirk Bertels from Duffel, who, together with his family, has specialized in growing tomato specialties for many years.

The Bertels family grows San Marzano tomatoes on an area of 4.5 hectares and produced around 1.5 million kilos last year. "Their company is a real family business with a clear focus on quality—something clearly appreciated by customers at home and abroad."

BelOrta has offered San Marzano tomatoes since 2008. "Known for its firm texture and rich flavor, the oblong tomato is particularly popular in Mediterranean cuisine. This tomato is also a distinctly seasonal tomato: it is offered from week 12 to week 50, when demand is highest. Much of the volume is harvested with the crown, but bulk and packaged products are also gaining importance."
