The 2024 Sector Figures Report presented by AFCO (Spanish Association of Corrugated Cardboard Packaging Manufacturers) shows that the Spanish corrugated cardboard industry continues consolidating its position as a fundamental pillar of the economy and sustainability.
This strategically relevant sector produces 5,836 million square meters of corrugated cardboard, a turnover of 6,967 million euros, and generates 25,445 jobs in the country (12,095 direct and 13,350 indirect ones).
A key sector in the value chain
With 64 corrugating companies and 86 factories in operation, Spain is the third largest producer of corrugated cardboard in Europe, behind only Italy and Germany.
Cardboard is the preferred packaging solution of many industries because of its versatility and efficiency. It is mainly demanded by the food sector, which accounts for 60% of total consumption. Consumer goods account for 13.24% of demand, and logistics and e-commerce for 11.33%.
"Corrugated packaging protects products and optimizes transport and logistics processes. In addition, its endless customization and printing possibilities make it a communication and branding tool," stated Leopoldo Santorromán, president of AFCO.
Recycling, efficiency, and circular economy: the role of corrugated cardboard
The report also underlines the sector's strong commitment to sustainability. Thanks to its renewable origin and its biodegradable and recyclable end-of-life, corrugated cardboard is consolidating its position as the most responsible packaging option. It has a 90% efficient recovery and recycling rate, the highest of all materials in Europe, that permits turning each used container into a resource for manufacturing new ones, avoiding waste, and positioning itself as a benchmark in the circular economy.

"The corrugated industry boosts the economy, generates employment, and protects the environment. We are an example of the true circular economy," stated the president of AFCO.
AFCO's Sector Figures Report provides an up-to-date, objective, and detailed picture of Spain's corrugated cardboard industry, underlining its industrial, logistical, and environmental importance.
"This report reflects the strength of our industry, our constant activity, essential role in the supply chain, and commitment to efficient, sustainable processes and solutions, adapting to market demands. We are not only looking to grow but to consolidate a responsible and forward-looking activity," concluded Leopoldo Santorromán.
