Greenhouse farms in Turkestan Region, Kazakhstan, produced 150,000 tons of vegetables in 2024, and local farmers aim to increase this number to 200,000 tons this year. However, many agribusinesses face financial challenges, particularly a lack of working capital.
Large greenhouse complexes are concentrated in the Saryagash district, providing jobs for most of the local population. For many, greenhouse work is their primary source of income.
"The work is very demanding," said a greenhouse worker. "We grow strawberries and take great care to produce high-quality crops while ensuring profitability."
Farmers in the Sayram district have taken greenhouse production to the next level by growing bananas using Turkish technology. More than 1,000 seedlings were planted, and a tropical microclimate was created on five hectares with advanced drip irrigation systems.
"We have also started growing avocados, mangoes, and pineapples with the guidance of Turkish agronomists," said Islam Aliyev, a local entrepreneur.
Over 1,000 greenhouses now operate in Turkestan Region. In 2023, the government provided subsidies for heating costs, helping greenhouse owners install new heating systems on 30 hectares of industrial greenhouses.
"There is strong state support for heated greenhouses," said Aktore Tuimebek, head of the regional agricultural department. "We provide over 8 million tenge per hectare in subsidies for industrial greenhouses and cover up to 30% of construction costs for new projects."
Greenhouse farms in Turkestan Region currently supply fresh produce to over 40% of Kazakhstan's population, and farmers are confident they can further boost productivity in 2025.
