The ability to propagate their own plants gives Great Lakes Greenhouses complete control over quality from the very beginning. "We ensure that only the best plants enter our growing cycle, which translates into superior produce reaching our customers within 12 to 24 hours of harvesting," Jeff Richardson, Vice President of Sales explains. This streamlined operation is supported by strict food safety measurement and organic certification programs, including from Primus, EcoCert, Pro-Cert, and the USDA.
"Our journey has been one of continuous learning and adaptation," says at Great Lakes Greenhouses. "We have grown alongside the industry, embracing new technologies and practices to maintain the highest standards of quality and efficiency."
Great Lakes Greenhouses has been in the greenhouse industry for over four decades. Founded in 1983 by Paul Dyck, the company started as a modest 2.5-acre greenhouse in Leamington, Ontario. Today, that vision has flourished into a sprawling 118-acre operation, setting a benchmark for quality and efficiency in the production of English seedless cucumbers, mini cucumbers, and organic bell peppers.
It helps to be a family business
"We are more than just a business; we are a family," Jeff emphasizes. "Being family-owned and operated allows us to be incredibly nimble in responding to market needs. When our partners signaled an urgent demand for organic bell peppers, we acted swiftly—transitioning our organic crop from both tomatoes and peppers to exclusively peppers."
This responsiveness has proven to be a competitive advantage for the company. "By focusing solely on organic bell peppers, we not only met but exceeded our partners' expectations. It's about listening to our customers and delivering what they need without compromising on quality."
A breakthrough year for organic pepper production
The year 2024 marked a significant milestone for Great Lakes Greenhouses, particularly in organic pepper production. "Many growers were struggling to produce high-quality organic bell peppers, leading to a market shortage," Jeff notes. "Rather than seeing this as a challenge, we saw an opportunity. Our owner made a bold decision to dedicate all 28 acres of our organic production to peppers."
This strategic shift paid off, with partners welcoming the increased yields and reliable supply. "We took a calculated risk, and the results speak for themselves. Our partners were incredibly grateful for our ability to step in."
The desire to be sustainable, and remaining sustainable
"We as growers don't just grow produce; we cultivate a future," Juan Lopez, Head Grower at Great Lakes Greenhouses Inc. says. "We therefore employ several advanced horticultural techniques to ensure the health and sustainability of our organic bell pepper crops.
"Between growing cycles, we steam-disinfect each pot at 90°C (194°F) for several hours to eliminate pathogens and pests," he explains. "We then mix the substrate thoroughly to maintain optimal nutrient distribution and aeration."
"Rather than relying on chemicals, we release beneficial insects like Swirski (Amblyseius swirskii) to combat thrips and whiteflies, Colemani (Aphidius colemani) for aphids, and Persimilis (Phytoseiulus persimilis) to control spider mites," Juan details. "It's a natural, sustainable way to protect our crops."
"Our drip irrigation system optimizes water use, ensuring plants receive the right amount of moisture while minimizing waste. By regularly pruning and trellising our plants, we improve air circulation, reduce disease risk, and enhance fruit quality. We try to maintain an environment that supports natural pollinators, and our careful post-harvest handling ensures that our peppers reach consumers in peak condition."
With the success of its organic pepper expansion, Great Lakes Greenhouses is preparing to introduce new packaging options to meet consumer demand. "Our ability to produce a true organic green pepper allows us to offer the sought-after stoplight pack our partners have been requesting," Jeff says.
