Canadian demand for domestic lettuce jumps

The demand for Canadian organic lettuce has increased significantly over the past week. "Sales are rising very rapidly due to the U.S. tariff situation. Canadian consumers are definitely paying attention to us putting the Canadian flag on our product–we started doing that early last week," says Ian Adamson, president of Greenbelt Organic Greens.

Since last week, Adamson says demand for its product has jumped by 30 percent. "Canadians are very interested in purchasing Canadian product," he says, adding that the increase in demand is being seen across all of its mixes which include Ontario Super Crunch, Ontario Arugula, Ontario Spring Mix, and Ontario Baby Romaine.

Expanded product supply
As for supply, there is also more volume available than this time last year. "We're in better shape because we've sorted out some things as an organic facility," says Adamson. "We're working with organic soils and the University of Guelph and we've ironed out some of our issues with production in our soil-based system. Now our productivity levels are higher than they have been ever."

On top of meeting the increased demand for Canadian lettuce, Greenbelt Organic Greens is also returning to the microgreen business (Adamson formerly co-founded Greenbelt Microgreens). Next week, the company will launch its new organic microgreen line with three SKUs including broccoli, arugula, and pea seedlings. The microgreens will be packaged in a 50-gram clamshell.
