New upside-down cucumber cultivation started, with articifial lighting this time

A new upside-down cucumber crop is planted at the World Horti Centre, in the middle of Westland area, in early January. This is new cultivation, led by Vertify, with Biomic Agritech's innovative concept, which has already been run for two years. It has attracted a lot of attention.

This third round of cultivation was chosen with half artificial lighting and half without. This was chosen because the innovative Israeli company noticed that the market is not yet ready to move towards a fully robotised cultivation concept.

Meanwhile, there is a lot of interest in more energy-efficient cultivation and scaling up productions per square metre. That too is possible with the Biomic Agritech system, Eliezer and Ronit Edelstein are convinced. With the new trial, they want to take another step and show what is possible.

The advantage of the system from Israel is that the crop can easily be moved via the rolling gutters, and the plants do not grow along a wire. This makes it possible to increase the plant density, up to 50% and higher. If crop work needs to take place, the gutters can temporarily be placed more apart.

Growing at higher densities requires extra lighting. Intermediate lighting has been added for this purpose, in half of the greenhouse. The expectation is that intermediate lighting will also further increase production per square metre.

The first results from the new set-up are expected in March. The current crop runs until mid-June.
