Poland expands raspberry production as demand rises and exports grow

Raspberry cultivation in Poland is experiencing a period of growth. With strategic management, this trend may persist. In Ukraine, annual raspberry production stands at approximately 50,000 tons, slightly less than in Poland. The Ukrainian market has reached its capacity, presenting an opportunity for Polish raspberries, as the fresh fruit market in Ukraine is small and ripe for development.

Current estimates indicate around 1,000 hectares of raspberries undercover in Poland. The Polish raspberry industry's total production value is approximately $127 million for processing and $178 million for fresh fruit. The fresh fruit market is expected to continue leading in value growth over processing.

Poland produces 90% of the world's raspberry concentrate and enters the new season with low concentrate reserves, likely increasing demand and purchase prices. The Polish processing sector is advanced, producing juices, puree, and frozen fruit, handling about 100,000 tons annually. Raspberries for processing are harvested mechanically.

In contrast, raspberry production in the Netherlands is declining due to labor shortages. With an average pay of $7.50/hour in Poland and $21.50/hour in the Netherlands, the latter still faces workforce issues due to living costs. Consequently, companies source raspberries from Poland rather than selling them there.

The primary challenge for Polish raspberries is industry consolidation among producers and traders to ensure uniform quality and competitive pricing in international markets.
