US: Construction begins on 25-acre Rhode Island greenhouse

Construction is moving forward on a 25-acre greenhouse that is being built off of Ten Rod Road and South County Trail in Exeter.

Rhode Island Grows founder Tim Schartner told 12 News on Tuesday that as of Friday, the project has secured the first half of its funding. On the current timeline, the greenhouse may start producing tomatoes by the fall of 2025.

Thanks to $25.8 million from the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank, Rhode Island Grows has been able to secure the site of the greenhouse and avoid delays.

Schartner said his team has been having weekly meetings with Rhode Island Commerce to make sure the project is running smoothly, allowing Rhode Island Grows to start hiring and training employees about four months before its first anticipated harvest.
