A beautiful array of citrus was showcased this week as retailers focused on winter's bounty. Pummelos, clementines, dekopons, satsumas, Meyer lemons, tangerines, grapefruit, kumquats, and Navel, Valencia, Cara Cara, and blood oranges offered a sunny sparkle to help shoppers fight off the winter chill.
Other winter favorites like collards, turnip greens, kale, Swiss chard, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage helped make warm and hearty meals. Cherries, apples, mangos, and berries were on hand for healthy snacks and smoothies. Avocados were very popular just in time for watching football championships and bowl games.
Total ad numbers this week were 275,851, a 1% decrease from last week's total of 278,144. The total for the same week last year was 5% higher at 291,014. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 159,295 (58%), onions and potatoes 24,965 (9%), vegetables 87,025 (32%), herbs 1,172, ornamentals 760, and hemp 3,806. The number of ads for organic produce was 41,651, 15% of total ads.
The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus ads) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included Gala apples (per lb.) at 40% and seedless grapes (red at 40%, white at 36%). Significant decreases included tangerines (3 lb.) at 21% and Cara Cara Navel oranges (3 lb.) at 12%. There were no significant changes in price for onions and potatoes or vegetables this week.
