The fresh produce industry is setting increasingly high standards for packaging. With growing consumer awareness of health and environmental sustainability, global regulations targeting single-use, non-degradable plastics are advancing. This shift has driven exporters and retailers toward compostable and bio-based materials, making sustainable packaging for fresh produce a prominent market trend.
Xiamen Changsu specializes in manufacturing compostable packaging films tailored for high-value fresh produce products. According to Alex, Head of the Marketing Department, "BOPLA film is derived from sugarcane, making it a bio-based, recyclable, and compostable material. Under industrial composting conditions, the film disintegrates within two weeks—faster than banana or orange peels. Compared to traditional petroleum-based packaging, BOPLA film reduces carbon emissions by 70%."
A standout feature of BOPLA film is its breathability. Alex elaborated, "This feature helps control condensation, reduces spoilage, and extends the freshness of fresh produce. With growing emphasis on minimizing losses, BOPLA packaging can extend shelf life by up to 60%, significantly reducing decay while maintaining visual appeal."
Driven by stricter environmental regulations, particularly in Europe and North America, the demand for more sustainable packaging is rising. Consumers now favor compostable, bio-based materials to mitigate environmental harm. Alex noted, "High-end European supermarkets are already using our compostable films for salad packaging and bakery packaging. Additionally, as demand for fresh produce preservation increases, so do performance requirements for packaging, including breathability, stretch resistance, and transparency." In addition to functionality, design trends in produce packaging are evolving. "We've moved beyond basic fruit labels and transparent bags to innovative options like windowed designs. Personalized, customized packaging is particularly popular in retail and plays a crucial role in brand differentiation," Alex explained.
BOPLA film utilizes advanced low-carbon biaxially oriented process technology to deliver high performance while significantly reducing its carbon footprint. With at least 70% lower carbon emissions than petroleum-based alternatives, the film excels in transparency, strength, and durability. Its exceptional water permeability makes it ideal for preserving freshness and reducing decay.
Every year, Xiamen Changsu exports thousands of containers of packaging films to global markets. BOPLA Film is focusing on key export markets like Germany, France, and Spain, where demand is rapidly increasing. "We look forward to reconnecting with existing customers and meeting new ones at the Berlin Fruit Logistica," Alex shared. Xiamen Changsu will exhibit from February 5–7 in Hall 2.1, Booth B-20a, offering a range of products and free samples to attendees.
