One of the most important agricultural cities of Turkey, Hatay, attracts attention with its rich agricultural potential. Farmers struggling with the difficulties after the earthquake are trying to continue their production with innovative methods.
Living in the Antakya district, Servet Ertaş harvests his 20-acre field of early pumpkin. It is converted into a greenhouse to grow crops. This process allows farmers to both compensate for their economic losses and revitalize agricultural activities in the region.
Farmer Ertaş explains his goals by saying, "We are preparing to plant pumpkins. We will plant pumpkins on approximately 20 acres and we are preparing for that. We started planting after the New Year. After planting, we plan to harvest in March." This early harvest gives farmers a market advantage.
Ertaş emphasizes the necessity of building a greenhouse to reduce the effects of frost and cold weather in the winter months. "Because we need to keep the environment warm. We need to do this because we will grow early," he explains, indicating the role of greenhouse construction in agricultural production.
