On January 1st, Friðheimar tomato farm and horticulture center will take over Jarðarberjaland, Iceland's largest grower of strawberries. As reported in Morgunblaðið, Jarðarberjaland typically produces around 60 tons of strawberries annually.
Like Friðheimar, the company utilizes advanced technology to grow all year round, including a 4,000-square-meter lighted greenhouse. For scale, Friðheimar operates greenhouses that cover 11,000 square meters in total.
Having been operating for 30 years now, Friðheimar is owned by a married couple, Knútur Rafn Ármann and Helena Hermundardóttir. Tourism now makes up an important part of their income, with guests visiting from around the world to try their delicious soups and tomato drinks. On their expansion into the strawberry market, Knútur said:
"We are very excited to take over. Jarðarberjaland is our neighboring horticultural station. It was rebuilt from the ground up in 2022 after being damaged in a storm. The station specializes in year-round strawberry cultivation and has very advanced equipment."
