Trials for blueberry growing are multiplying in Egypt. Behind one of these trials, in the Sadat region, is Mahmoud Essa of Blue Nile Egypt. He reports on his experience.
Essa says, "We carried out our first test for blueberry production this season. We planted an area of six hectares in June, and have just harvested the first crops. The test was a success for 95% of the pots, with good yield and nice fruit quality."
Growing blueberries in Egypt is not an easy business, adds Essa. Producing blueberries in Egypt is not an easy business, adds Essa. "We have faced several challenges, including temperatures that are sometimes too low, and diseases and pests such as thrips and fungus. But it's entirely possible to adapt by adopting good farming operations and selecting varieties suited to the Egyptian climate and soil."
According to the grower, several companies are turning their attention to blueberries, and production tests are multiplying in the country. He adds, "There are also several foreign investors who have joined this sector, which looks set to develop rapidly in the country."
"Production costs are high compared with other soft fruits. But we will make progress in reducing costs by increasing acreage and achieving economies of scale, and also by sourcing substrates made in Egypt." continues Essa.
In terms of seasonality, Essa says, "We carried our trial this year from June, with first harvest happening in December and peak harvest expected in April. However. I think the best seasonality would be from November To March.
"In terms of varietal choice, I see that three varieties have proved most suitable and effective in Egypt, and these are Atlas, Ventura, and Gyptor. Many other varieties are being tested or already in production with good results," Essa concludes.
