“The hard way often brings the greatest growth”

Founded and led by brothers Patrik and Tommy Sigg, Sven Sigg AB is recognized as one of Finland's largest greenhouse tomato growers, located in, Finland. They have a diverse portfolio that includes tomatoes, peppers, and bell peppers. Spanning 88,969 square meters of growing area, Sven Sigg AB also focused on sustainability and innovation.

The Sigg brothers represent the third generation of growers in their family, which started in the late 1980s. The Närpes region is known as one of the Nordic countries' main agricultural areas, where the controlled environment of greenhouses enables year-round production despite the challenges of long, dark winters and extreme cold temperatures.

According to Matts-Erik Lindqvist of Hatec Baltic, who recently delivered dehumidifiers to the company, "Sven Sigg AB is a good example of a company that prioritizes both quality and sustainability, leading to their success. Their dedication to advancing technology systems is clear in their greenhouse practices, enabling sustainability."

With 35 employees working across their various greenhouse facilities, the company has maintained a strong focus on growing vegetables in an environmentally responsible manner. They have earned global recognition with certifications such as GLOBALG.A.P. and GRASP.

Innovation to be sustainable
Patrik Sigg's background in horticulture, combined with years of hands-on experience, has driven the company's approach to sustainable farming. Although Patrik initially began his studies at Korsholm's horticultural school, he later interrupted his education and chose a more practical route through courses. He attributes much of his success to the lessons learned both at home and from his own experiences and mistakes. He comments, "I've learned so much from both my formal education and the practical lessons that come from hands-on experience. The hard way often brings the greatest growth."

"We're committed to reducing our carbon footprint, and this extends to how we heat our greenhouses," Patrik explains. "We rely entirely on solid fuels instead of oil-based systems, and this has had a significant impact on both our sustainability and costs."

Sven Sigg AB uses a combination of biological pest control and sustainable farming methods to ensure healthy crops while protecting the environment. "Our greenhouses are free from chemical pesticides, relying instead on biological agents such as beneficial insects to combat pests", Patrik says.

A family business for the community
Since joining the Närpes Grönsaker cooperative in 2007, the Sigg brothers have continually developed within the local agricultural community. The cooperative, which has been in operation since 1957, is owned by local growers and serves as a key distributor for Sven Sigg AB's produce. Patrik Sigg has also served on the cooperative's board, contributing his knowledge and leadership to support the local agricultural industry.

"We take pride in our close-knit work environment. With 35 employees, we are a community," Patrik adds. The company also takes extensive security measures to protect its operations, ensuring that only authorized personnel enter its greenhouses. "We take security seriously here," says Patrik. "Visitors must wear protective clothing, and the gates are locked to keep the greenhouses safe from any unwanted guests who could potentially disrupt our work."

Advancements and family values
The challenging outdoor climate in Finland, with its freezing temperatures and long periods of darkness, has inspired the brothers to invest in advanced technologies that allow them to maintain optimal growing conditions year-round. "The technology we use is important to keeping our operations running smoothly, especially in such a demanding climate," explains Tommy Sigg.

Beyond the world of agriculture, Patrik's personal interests also play a significant role in shaping the company's values. An avid motorsport enthusiast, Patrik balances his professional life with quality time spent with his family, including his partner and their daughter, born in 2010.
