"Bremia is a genetically diverse organism responsible for causing downy mildew in lettuce. This pathogen poses a significant problem for lettuce growers worldwide, as different races of Bremia lactucae can be present in a single production field, leading to yield and quality issues. This disease typically emerges in winter when high humidity and temperatures between 12 and 20°C create favorable conditions for its development. Identifying it in the field is relatively straightforward. You'll notice yellowish, well-defined spots on the upper surfaces of the leaves, while the underside may show fungal sporulation, forming a whitish layer."
How important are resistant portfolios in fighting against Bremia?
"Resistant portfolios are crucial as they provide a robust defense against the disease, reducing reliance on chemical treatments and enhancing overall crop resilience, as well as providing healthier and cleaner products to final consumers. To producers, Bremia resistant portfolios offer a great advantage ensuring higher yields, and reduced risk of crop loss."
What are the key strategies for managing Bremia?
"Effective management requires resistant portfolios as well as a combination of preventive measures. The first step begins even before the plants are transplanted into the field. This involves preventive management during the seedling stage in the nursery, using chemical and/or biological products. After transplanting, maintaining good nutritional and biological management is crucial. Keeping the plants well-nourished and balanced helps prevent not only downy mildew but also other diseases."
