Pietro Bastiano - Fe.Vi Frutta

The strawberry market is looking more positive

Every year, it is increasingly easy to find Italian strawberries on the counters of greengrocers and supermarkets in the autumn period. Many consider them to be an item that never tires, although it is the spring months that drive consumption.

"Harvesting frequency has more than doubled in 20 days: we are now doing four rounds per week, with a total of 400-500 packages sold in the Italian general markets. We supply many stalls, especially in Lazio, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, and Veneto," explains Pietro Bastiano, sales manager of Fe.Vi Frutta, from Policoro (Matera).

The varieties being harvested by the supplier members are Florida-Fortuna and RedSayra. "Supplies will tend to increase further in the coming weeks. Yields are looking very good and of good size. There are many farmers who have not started harvesting yet. Current selling prices are around 20 euro per 2 kg crate."

The strawberry market is therefore looking positive. "Christmas will give a greater impulse to consumption. Demand usually increases from 8 December onwards, and sales prices usually increase too by around 5% compared to current quotations. We started about a month ago: a season is getting longer and better every year."
