Exploring cultivation innovations at the expoSE & expodirekt fair

Recently, the Hydroponic Systems team had the opportunity to attend the expoSE & expodirekt fair in Karlsruhe, Germany. This year, they focused on sharing innovative solutions for German strawberry farmers, particularly in preventing diseases that affect plant roots.

The importance of prevention in strawberry cultivation
Strawberry cultivation in Germany has grown significantly in recent years, but it also faces challenges, especially regarding root health. Root diseases can be devastating, affecting not only the quality of the harvest but also the profitability of crops. Therefore, it is crucial to implement techniques that minimize these risks.

The use of Spacers as a solution
During the presentation at the fair, the Hydroponic Systems team highlighted the use of Spacers, minimal surfaces that allow substrate bags to be almost suspended in the air. This technique not only prevents direct contact with the soil but also improves air circulation around the roots, which is essential for disease prevention. By keeping the bags elevated, moisture at the base of the plants is reduced, a key factor in pathogen proliferation.

Economic savings and sustainability in draining
Additionally, a channeling system was implemented beneath the substrate bags. This system collects drainage, allowing for disinfection and reuse. This approach is not only ecological but also represents significant economic savings for growers. By reusing water and nutrients, resources are optimized, and production costs are reduced.

The future of hydroponics in Germany
Hydroponics in Germany is on the rise, and events like expoSE & expodirekt are essential for fostering innovation and knowledge exchange. The adoption of hydroponic techniques not only improves cultivation efficiency but also enables farmers to adapt to changing climate and market conditions.
