Turkish tomato market: growing, but challenging

The 23rd edition of Growtech is in full swing in Antalya, Turkey. With exhibitors from 31 countries and visitors registered from over 160 nations, the event is said to be bigger than in previous years. Marketing Manager Taha Tunc highlights the event's growing prominence, stating, "Indicators suggest that we're breaking our own record this year, making it the most attended edition in 23 years."

Discussions at the show touch on current trends in Turkish horticulture, particularly the growing adoption of virus-resistant tomato seeds. While the warm Turkish climate can naturally mitigate some plant viruses, growers are increasingly opting for these resilient varieties.

Turkey's tomato export market experienced a surge two years ago, largely driven by the energy crisis in the Netherlands, which affected greenhouse production in Europe. "Exports to Europe increased dramatically when Dutch growers reduced their output due to high energy costs. Now that Dutch greenhouses are using lights again, the urgency has diminished somewhat," shared another attendee.

Extreme weather in Southern Europe this year may drive renewed demand for Turkish tomatoes to fill the gap in European supply chains. However, uncertainties remain, including logistical challenges and fluctuating currency values.

Opportunities through the challenges
Despite economic challenges, including the volatility of the Turkish lira and government-imposed export restrictions to stabilize the currency, the atmosphere at Growtech remains upbeat. "You can feel the positive vibe at the show," noted Taha. "There are new developments and opportunities, especially in connections with the Middle East, Central Asia, and Russia."

While growth in Turkish greenhouses is evident, high-tech projects remain limited, with most developments focusing on accessible and scalable solutions. Other industry professionals at the show report fruitful early connections.

This year's Growtech hosts 674 exhibitors, including pavilions from the Netherlands, Germany, India, and South Korea. A notable development is the debut of a dedicated Indian pavilion. "Indian exhibitors have always been a significant presence, but this year they've come together under one roof, showcasing their innovations prominently," Taha remarked.

With 280 international companies participating, Growtech maintains its dual focus on both the Turkish market and the global agricultural sector. "Four out of every ten companies here are from outside Turkey," Tunc added.

"The event has been held 22 times before, and this year it's the 23rd. We hope it will continue for many more years," Taha concluded on the first day.
