Belgian salad company Slamotra, which 10 years ago became one of the first salad companies in Europe to switch from Son-t to 100% LED lighting from Oreon, is taking the next step. "Innovation has caught up with us," says Franky Hens, owner of Slamotra. "LED lighting has become much more efficient in 10 years. In addition, we have learned a lot in recent years about the right spectrum and intensity at different stages of growth. We used all that knowledge in the next step. We also wanted a dimmable installation that would allow us to respond better to seasons and energy prices."
A conscious decision to renew
Although the original LED luminaires still functioned perfectly, Slamotra decided to invest in the future. The company again opted for water-cooled luminaires, but this time for the dimmable Monarch. "Of course, we are extremely proud that Franky has chosen us again," says Arnold de Kievit, Oreon sales manager. "Franky was one of the first to invest in water-cooled LED 10 years ago. Like no other, he knows the features and benefits of these lamps and although we have now also offered him air-cooled luminaires, Franky is sticking with water-cooled."
In addition to the luminaires, the existing 230V wiring was replaced with a modern 400V variant, which ensures a more efficient power supply. Belgian company Indagro, carried out the installation, and cultivation consultant Isabel Vandevelde of Lycopersicon supervised the project.
The revamped plant, which has been operational since September 2024, marks a unique collaboration between Slamotra, Oreon, Indagro, and Isabel Vandevelde. Owners Franky Hens and Kirsten Audenaert demonstrate that innovation and sustainability go hand in hand. Arnold de Kievit: "With this first, Slamotra and Oreon set a new standard for LED lighting in the horticultural sector. An example of how progress and cooperation can lead to even better results in cultivation."
