In Ukraine, fruit and vegetable losses are the highest in Europe, with up to 60% of produce going to waste after harvest. A key reason for this, as reported by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, is the lack of proper storage facilities, which holding back Ukraine's ability to make the most of its fresh produce.
Improving storage and equipment could give a big boost to Ukraine's economy, especially in rural areas. But small and medium farms face hurdles like not having the right certificates to sell their goods in the EU and struggling to reach buyers outside local markets.
Another major issue came from Russia's attack on Ukraine, which not only destroyed a large portion of the country's freshwater supply but also left farmlands filled with landmines. This has made farming even more challenging, especially in areas that used to grow lots of vegetables.
The damage to the agriculture sector is huge, costing more than $80 billion. This is a big hit to Ukraine, nearly equal to what the country earns in a year. Solving these problems could help Ukraine grow more food and strengthen its economy.
