Premium plum tomatoes for specialised distributors

The horticultural campaign in Sicily basically never stops, except for a few weeks in August. There is a shift from long-cycle productions to short-cycle summer productions, and then back to autumn-winter productions which last until late spring. In this context, tomato transplants are often staggered in terms of time and variety, in order to meet market demand throughout the season: this is the case of Azienda Agricola Russo which, a few weeks ago, started harvesting its new production of high-quality red plum tomatoes.

Gioacchino Russo

"Demand has been high right from the very first day of harvesting," reports Gioacchino Russo, owner of the company. "Just like every year, specialised Italian and foreign large-scale retailers have been waiting for the first batches of our plum tomatoes to fill their counters with high-end produce."

"For years, we have been known for our reliability in producing and supplying plum tomatoes and a few other tomato varieties of the highest quality. It is no coincidence that, over time, our reputation has spread to the specialised distributors of the products most sought-after by consumers, also thanks to our investing heavily in the facilities and to our meticulous production techniques. The purpose of such meticulousness is to obtain plum tomatoes with excellent flavour, texture and the necessary shelf-life for logistical purposes."

The attention that Russo puts into cultivation is now well-known to the major players dealing in the premium range of plum tomatoes. For some time now, the company has also been making itself known abroad, not only through communication in the trade press, but also by participating in major international trade fairs. Here, success came soon, in the form of supply contracts for the H&R sector and beyond.

"In December, we will resume with the harvesting of our specialities which, for this coming season, include premium varieties of yellow, orange, green, black and tiger plum tomatoes, alongside a new red San Marzano. They are all tasty varieties that not only follow our proverbial production quality, but which will see it improved and, we are sure, even more appreciated".
