The research was conducted to gain better insight into the opportunities and challenges in Italian greenhouse horticulture for Dutch companies that are interested in this sector.
Panorama protected cultivation
The English-language report contains a qualitative overview of Italian-protected cultivation, based on quantitative data from, among others, the National Statistics Office ISTAT and other relevant sources. It shows the distribution of both ornamental and fruit and vegetable cultivation in greenhouses in Italy. Among other things, the specific characteristics of the production area, the level of technology of the greenhouses, cultivation techniques used, entrepreneur profile (agronomic; technical), market situation (logistics; distribution; export), medium-term trends and expectations and willingness and ability to invest were taken into account.
Case studies Verona and Salerno
Based on a classification using the above criteria, a further in-depth analysis was carried out for two production areas: Verona (Northern Italy) and Salerno (Southern Italy). The two case studies delve deeper into, for example, the level of innovation, collaboration with research centers and universities, subsidy options from the Rural Development Funds (CAP 2023-2027), and the presence of relevant agro-businesses. Attention is also paid to various sustainability aspects, such as the use of renewable energy, innovative soil management, water management, and the reduction of chemical crop protection. Finally, a strengths and weaknesses analysis ( SWOT ) was drawn up for both areas.
