South Africa: Michigan State University Delegation hosted at Midvaal farm

Two weeks ago on Friday, 4 October 2024. The Midvaal Local Municipality Visited a Young and Booming Hydroponics Farmer and founder of Tsehla Holdings Mrs. Roseline Mapuranga as she hosted the Michigan State University Delegation at her farm in Homelands, Midvaal.

Roseline Mapuranga, a rising star in hydroponic farming, proudly hosted a delegation from Michigan State University (MSU) at her thriving farm in Homelands, Midvaal. This visit marks an important milestone for Mapuranga, this visit is a follow-up after the prestigious fellowship at Michigan State University that she attended in September 2023, furthering her passion for sustainable agriculture.

During the visit, Roseline showcased her innovative hydroponic systems and a diverse array of fresh produce, including Spring onions, red cabbage, English cucumbers, and tomatoes which she successfully supplies the Freshlinq Market, Ocean Basket, Encore Restaurant, and Harvest Fresh.

As part of her vision for the future, Mapuranga shared her plans to establish a Training Centre for climate-smart agriculture aimed at equipping local farmers with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in modern farming. This initiative will focus on sustainable practices, hydroponics, and the importance of food security in the region.

Mapuranga also addressed the challenges faced in the field, including access to resources and climate variability. "While there are obstacles, I believe that with the right training and support, we can overcome these challenges and create a thriving agricultural community," she added.

The visit concluded with discussions on potential collaborations between Mapuranga's farm MSU and the Midvaal Local Municipality highlighting the importance of knowledge exchange and support in developing sustainable agricultural practices and looking into a proposal to send other emerging farmers to do the same program at Michigan State University.

Roseline Mapuranga is a testament to the power of education and determination in transforming lives and communities through innovative farming techniques. Her story is not just about personal success but about empowering others to embrace the future of agriculture.
