In Basel, Switzerland, Carlos Goulart, Brazil's Secretary of Agricultural Defense, presented the country's regulatory landscape for biological products at the Annual Biocontrol Industry Meeting (ABIM). He emphasized how the Brazilian government is driving the expansion of the bio-inputs sector as part of its commitment to sustainable agriculture.
"Today, Brazil is at the forefront of agricultural biological product adoption, with nearly 50% of Brazilian farmers using these products," noted Goulart.
Brazil has been regulating and innovating in pest control products for almost 20 years. Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) has registered 662 low-impact agricultural products. "Nearly 75% of these products were introduced between 2008 and 2024, illustrating that while regulatory progress is significant, full adoption of biologicals in the field takes time," Goulart added.
Brazil's bio-input production is growing at an annual rate of 30%, outpacing the global growth rate of 18%.
The Brazilian delegation at the event also included Edilene Cambraia, Director of the Department of Plant Health and Agricultural Inputs, and Tatiane Nascimento, Head of the Division of Formulated Product Registration at Mapa.
