Community leaders in the Town of Plattsburgh and across the North Country are uniquely addressing food insecurity—by building their own greenhouse.
The newly constructed greenhouse at Saint Joseph's Outreach Center is set to provide fresh produce for the church's soup kitchen and the JCEO's (Joint Council for Economic Opportunity) food pantry.
Construction of the greenhouse began in May, with the goal of providing healthy, homegrown fruits and vegetables to people in need.
Father Chris Looby, pastor of Saint Joseph's Outreach Center, believes the greenhouse will make a significant impact on the community.
"Groceries in general are expensive, and this food shelf will help folks get the nutrition they need through healthy fruits and vegetables," said Father Looby.
Plattsburgh Town Supervisor Michael Cashman echoed the importance of the initiative, stressing its year-round benefit.
"People are hungry 365 days a year. This outreach center is reaching into people's homes and making sure that not only they have food, but they have good nutritious food," said Cashman.
Officials plan to begin growing plants and food in the greenhouse by either March or April of next year.
